dear Libor, There is much in your comments and I am at a loss to respond. Yes, merely breathing is a blessing. "Life is not a word, it is a sentence." I like that. I would like to buy you a cup of coffee but there are only recurring gifts unless I give $100 and that is more than I can give at this time.

I wish I remembered Christmas in a kind light, but my mom totally stressed out about any holiday, and it meant my mom would stay up all night (literally) to wrap presents, not make dinner, and not make food the next day either until around 9 pm. She'd be in a horrible mood on xmas and xmas eve. I remember wishing xmas did not exist. My dad would disappear. I don't know what he did, but he was absent. Christmas to me was a fantasy that existed in movies. I love your writing!!

Oh Loretta, I’m sorry to hear this. What do you do now as an adult? Is there anything special you do for yourself to reclaim this holiday as meaningful in someway? Or perhaps celebrate a different holiday then Christmas?

my husband is Jewish so we tend to celebrate those holidays more than Christmas and that works for me. Christmas usually means a day off with a nice meal, and a fire in the fireplace.

a good meal, a day of rest, and a cozy fire... that's a wonderful way to reclaim the day! Thanks for responding. And thank you for reading! (and for your very kind compliment)

The unicorn licensing letter is the best! Epitomises the spirit of generosity that is, to me, the meaning of this season. Wishing you and Mazie a serene and peaceful holiday season. Hugs.

Thank you for this beautiful, wondrous message, Jan. I wept when I read the letter approving the unicorn license. I think we need a nation-wide license to do what you’ve chosen to do - lights from candles, not devices, for a few previous days. Several years ago, we experienced a valley-wide power outage here over Christmas. I think it lasted two days. Once we got over our self-inflicted panic and grumbling, it was sublime. We came together, made sure our neighbors were warm and had food, and we improvised our celebratory feasts by candlelight.

Thank you, Claudia. I remember when the power went out! Down in Picabo, it was only for a few hours, but up your way, yes, it lasted a few days. I remember how panicked all of the second homeowners were, I believe more so than the rest of us because they had a very specific idea in mind of how the holiday should be. And isn’t expectation always our enemy? It hinders our ability to enjoy what is.
