Once in 1992, we drove off the coastal road into a village but couldn't go any further. No cars in the village so you had to leave them at the base and walk up the cobblestone into another century. Lots of women in black hovering in doorways. Another time, we decided to visit the inhabitants of a falling-down farmhouse in an olive orchard overlooking the sea. The farmer and his wife welcomed us and gave us olives but couldn't converse with us in Italian, only Sicilian dialect spoken.

what a fantastic experience!! And yes, the Sicilian dialect, which changes even in the various regions of Sicily. And the incredible, authentic hospitality! So wonderful. I love that you had this experience!!

I don't know what we were thinking. Probably that the mysterious old farmhouse was deserted. But...these two ancient people were sitting in their kitchen and treated us as if our behavior was perfectly normal!

If careful focus on the roadways gets you home safely, and as the Latin noun FOCUS means the hearth or fireplace at home, do you operate on many levels or is it more like cycles within cycles?

Appreciate your sharing. Love your writing.

thank you, Nat. Always the spiral, circles within circles, many levels. Thank you for reminding me that FOCUS means the hearth or fireplace at home - the center. So perfect.

Love the shifting gears analogy.

For those of us who are used to it, it becomes an almost unconscious response, as it seems to be for you as you live your life, my dear nomadic friend.
