those are all great, Pat! I've been using an expandable aluminum straw for years now (b/c I still like straws in public glasses) but I never considered bringing my own container for left-overs. Someone else mentioned that as well. Love the idea!!
Out of necessity, I grew up recycling. Cotton skirts became faded, they were cut up and made into curtains. Later, they became potholders. Some people will be able to take big steps to save our beautiful planet but we can all do something. Years ago, I began writing from home so now, my daily commute is about 18 inches to my spare bedroom-office. Local teens ask if they can buy my car because it never moves! And we've not forgotten the biggest thing we can do for our earth is VOTE BLUE!
Recycling things into new uses is actually such a good feeling! A sense that everything has many lives and many purposes. I’m glad we no longer use corn cobs in outhouses but distressed that folks view everything as disposable.
When I was a kid, twice a year- in spring and fall- my mom would haul boxes out from the basement filled with clothes. Hand-me downs from friends. The only thing new I would get were shoes. Or when my sister took up sewing!
Happy Holy Earth Day to you as well, CJ!
When you do read The Overstory, I'd love to hear your thoughts!!
Always good reminders of ways to love Our Mother.
I think baking an apple pie would be a wonderful way to celebrate this holy day!
The Overstory is a masterpiece. Powers has such a large vision. Thank you for your reminders about what we can do as individuals, every day.
Oh! I'm so happy that you've read this book as well, Susie! Quite extraordinary, yes!
Your Idaho backyard looks a lot like my rural hometown =)
I try to reuse plastic water bottles for workouts rather than dispose immediately
Happy Mother-Earth Day
Excellent! And your hometown must be beautiful! :) Happy Holy Earth Day!
I have a friend who always brings her own take out container to the restaurant. Problem solved!
Oh I love that idea!!
Great idea! of course ordering less is an option too...like that'll ever happen!
It’s crazy how portions have grown in the last two decades. Main courses that are easily for two! Or at least two meals! 😉
Jan, your thoughts awaken us to new ways of knowing/thinking about Mother Earth. Some things/ways I’ve adapted are:
Do not use straws
Bring my own containers when I go out to eat to bring left-overs home
Do not buy water in plastic, rather carry a reusable water bottle
These are just a few but I find it stimulating to listen to the creative ideas you offered.
We have only one home that we all share and need to take care of it, —- earth! Appreciate your thoughts friend, pat
