Happy new year, Jan! This is such a beautiful tradition, and a very meaningful one. What a way to capture the essence of a year! Your subconscious drive toward your house in Sicily is fascinating! I think I’m going to have to go buy a bunch of magazines and make a collage, even if it won’t be on New Year’s Day.
Thanks, Cheryl! Before Covid, the library always had a bin of free magazines. Or sometimes you can get them from the store for free (or discounted) when they've expired. I've also used calendars, flyers, and just about anything else that catches my eye. And yeah, pretty cool how this year's collage foretold of my Sicilian house - that's one heck of a surprise!
Love this, Jan. I enjoyed seeing your collages and reading your thoughts about them!
My sister Amy showed me the power of collage--and I used to do them when the kids were little as cards for family birthdays. I must admit, I had forgotten how amazing they are... Thank you so much for reminding me. I remember one Amy and her kids did for Bob when he got laid off in the economic downturn of 2009. It "saw" him for the wonderful person he was, and the situation for what it was. I remember a sheer pewter-colored ribbon on it, as well as a magazine cut-out of Buddha eyes, and many cut-out words that just fit perfectly.
The pieces become a whole, and the sum is bigger than the parts. Really special.
I hope you still have the one for Bob- or at least a photo. I regret I got rid of years of them when I moved and I should’ve taken photos. Now that you’re in a new place and it’s new year might be a fun time to do them together. 😊 Love to you!
Good idea! Yes, trying to forge a path in a new place in a new year could be just the inspiration. I don't remember if I have a photo, but I bet I do... somewhere on my phone. Love to you too Jan! :)) <3 (Can't find emojis!)
I made a collage! It was on the 2nd instead of the official holiday, but I am thinking it still counts.:) It was fun but I definitely ended up with a theme due to my magazine selection. I am so curious to see if the coming year will reveal any parallels. Thanks for the great idea.
Hey that's fantastic!! Definitely still counts! Hey, you can do it whenever. Yeah, magazine selection can definitely limit images - and - you may be surprised how many meanings an image can have. Can't wait to discuss at the end of the year! (or anytime along the way when something registers!)

Felice Anno Nuovo!
I’ve never seen that done at libraries or newsstands here, but I’ll scope it out. Thanks for the tip!
I love collages as an art form, but have never made one. Maybe 2023 is my year.
Wishing you a Happy and Healthy New Year, Jan!
Thank you, Joan! And to you!
Let me know if you do one!!
Good health and much happiness wherever you are.

Whoops my reply showed up as a separate comment!
