Happy new year, Jan! This is such a beautiful tradition, and a very meaningful one. What a way to capture the essence of a year! Your subconscious drive toward your house in Sicily is fascinating! I think I’m going to have to go buy a bunch of magazines and make a collage, even if it won’t be on New Year’s Day.

I love collages as an art form, but have never made one. Maybe 2023 is my year.

Wishing you a Happy and Healthy New Year, Jan!

Love this, Jan. I enjoyed seeing your collages and reading your thoughts about them!

My sister Amy showed me the power of collage--and I used to do them when the kids were little as cards for family birthdays. I must admit, I had forgotten how amazing they are... Thank you so much for reminding me. I remember one Amy and her kids did for Bob when he got laid off in the economic downturn of 2009. It "saw" him for the wonderful person he was, and the situation for what it was. I remember a sheer pewter-colored ribbon on it, as well as a magazine cut-out of Buddha eyes, and many cut-out words that just fit perfectly.

The pieces become a whole, and the sum is bigger than the parts. Really special.

I hope you still have the one for Bob- or at least a photo. I regret I got rid of years of them when I moved and I should’ve taken photos. Now that you’re in a new place and it’s new year might be a fun time to do them together. 😊 Love to you!
