Thanks so much for posting this, Jan! The impact of the rising cost of housing is incredibly important to understand because it affects everyone, not just those with lower incomes.
I have rented places for over two decades. I have also been a tenant. For years in Idaho I rented my properties out for way under market value, to young families who were working several jobs to try and make it. I got my mortgage paid, had a little extra money, and they had an affordable house to live in. Seemed like a win, win for everyone. The AirBNB and the house flipping craze were a disaster for normal people trying to buy normal houses. But in the area where I live now, they are building thousands of brand new and affordable houses so people are moving here in droves. But the house thing is a HUGE deal to me. Anyway, I try to do my part with my rental properties.
I am retired, living in a low income apartment complex, on a fixed income. The only way I am able to “make it” month to month is by working at least 20 hours a week at a low paying job. My health, fortunately, is good, so I am able to do this at age 68. It’s stressful and it pre-occupies my life knowing that I live close to the bone. I’m not sure how long I will be able to keep up.
