I love projects like this. But I feel for you. It’s not easy. Why don’t you hire someone just to give you a plan ( and you execute). It could save you a lot of money. Sometimes they pass on their discounts from suppliers. There are also apps which allow you to do 2D and 3D floor plans. You can place your furniture on the plans to get an idea of how it will fit. Not sure if this is the kind of suggestion you wanted. Unfortunately I have more!!! You’ll be thrilled when it’s done.
hahahah - I love the "unfortunately I have more!" :)
Have you ever used one of those apps? I've heard of them but I'm just not tech savvy enough. I couldn't even get the "try this hairstyle on a photo of you" app to work!. As for bringing in someone else, we definitely need to do that for the Sicily house. I'm completely dumbfounded on what to do there. But here, I can make it work. I have enough ideas - just need to test them out. And like I said, I like the idea of a surprise, of it slowly unfolding.
Great to have pictures. I’m somewhere in between….
We built our house in an over 55 community in Maine. Lots of help and guidance. I couldn’t visualize…and even got lost in the not big house after it was built and we’d moved in. The day my wife said ‘ we should talk about electrical outlets’ my response was ‘ don’t they just put them in and isn’t that what extension cords are for?’ Apparently…she had a plan knowing what was going where in a house that didn’t exist yet….I was overwhelmed.
hah! Yes, the outlets! You absolutely have to have the whole picture in your head to plan for that. Same with air vents. Really don't think I could start completely from scratch. Kudos to you for making it happen. (or to your wife ;)
I used to think that I was a visual thinker, especially during high school days. However, now I believe that I lean heavily towards vocal thinking with visual thinking in some cases. Makes me wonder if our thinking style can change unconsciously as we move through life?
Oh! that's an interesting question! Particularly as we tend to be far more imaginative as children (or maybe only as children). And imagination does include visual. And maybe also because whatever we use the most gets stronger (or becomes the crutch), so that becomes are modus operandi. I certainly have become more solitary and introverted with age - which I have read is common - so maybe that is true of how we think as well.
or not. lol. Maybe someone else has a better answer!
I appreciate ways of seeing as a point of entry to the house project. You’ve got me thinking about why house projects seem so tiring to me. The long, many-step process that’s fun for writing is not as much fun when the living space depends on a successful outcome - not too much surprise! Maybe you will help me keep a more open mind. :-)
Have you been to this lighting store down here in the valley? They’re small but helpful and so fun to browse: https://www.allowaylighting.com/
When you’re down here in the city of trees, tag me for a cuppa tea! 🫖
Tara! I didn't realize you're in Boise! Yes, we will absolutely have to have tea together when I'm back. Always have to come to Boise for my Trader Joe runs! :)
Just took a look at Alloway and fell in love with a $2,000 chandelier. hah! Will have to visit the store sometime.
As for house projects, yes, well, you know I'm in the same space! It was all feeling very laborious, like it would go on forever and we haven't even started yet (but you and I understand that the planning is of the utmost importance). That's when I came upon The New Yorker article. Reframing (visual word) how we think of things is always encouraged yet it's a challenge if we don't have a context that makes sense vs simply "flip it" to positive. I actually am excited now. I really do love waiting to open a wrapped gift. What about you?
I know from your articles only when you've already passed through! :-) Now we can plan ahead to meet at Alloway and see what's on clearance in the showroom! 😅 🥴 😂
You're right about unwrapping gifts. That's a lot more fun. Btw, your description of the house layout made perfect sense. :-)
Many neat ideas in this post—love that you used a remodel of your home to illustrate the different types of learners/thinkers! I'm certainly a verbal thinker and have the most difficult time with use of space...my visualization skills are close to zero. Good luck on your many projects here!

ok, what else you got? ;)

Such an interesting piece, Jan!
