What has made it all work for me is the passing of the torch to the next generation. I'm currently in Minneapolis where my son is hosting 15 for dinner tomorrow. In my family of origin, all holidays were the same. My mother made her "cooking for company" food (probably pot roast) and invited all the same people. I look forward to the three-generation event with lots of participatory meal-prep and a mix of family and friends.

That sounds lovely, Susie! I love the participatory meal-prep time almost more than dinner itself! Enjoy. May your day be blessed and filled with love!

I'll carry that blessing into tomorrow.

I am the default invocation leader at family get togethers, and this year my thoughts are very much along the lines of Lincoln here, and his hope that God might “heal the wounds of the nation, and to restore it … to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, and union.”

I mourn this country's direction now, not so much for those of us in the second generation, who are almost ready to clock out anyway, but rather for the third and fourth generations, those of my niece and nephew and their children, and the world they must face.

Yes, Mark, I hear you. And I hope the whole family hears your prayer. It is largely up to the next generations now to steer this ship. May they do so with wisdom and kindness.

Much love to you and your whole family!
